The University of Delaware Faculty Commons Book Club will meet Wednesday, April 20, to discuss Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life by William Deresiewicz.

The session will be led by Robert Hampel, professor in the School of Education and historian of education and contemporary educational policy.

Limited free copies of the books are available based upon registration. Participants will be contacted via email if they are eligible. Unfortunately an online version of the text is not available this time, but a few printed copies might be available for loan at the UD Library. Books are also available for purchase at a 25 percent discount at the UD Barnes and Noble Bookstore when mentioned to the cashiers.

The meeting for this book will be Wednesday, April 20, at 12:30 p.m. in Faculty Commons (116 Pearson Hall) with drinks and dessert provided. RSVP requested.

The author, Deresiewicz, was a professor at Yale University when he began noticing that students were losing their sense of critical and creative thinking. His claim is that the system is broken, but can be fixed. The New York Times Book Review says, “Anyone who cares about American higher education should ponder this book.”

The Faculty Commons is always looking for book club facilitators. Those who are interested in leading this discussion or sponsoring a session in the future can contact faculty-commons@udel.edu.
