Graduate students who are new to teaching are warmly welcomed to CTAL’s Teaching Assistant Orientation on August 21st from 1:00-5:00 pm. If you are currently supervising a graduate student who will be teaching for the first time, encourage them to attend this event to learn tips and tricks from a community of their peers. Want to help your grad student even further? Consider offering graduate students the opportunity to guest lecture on a topic close to their area of research. If possible, observe their teaching and provide constructive feedback. CTAL can help you create an observation protocol.
Graduate students are also invited to participate in CTAL’s new Graduate Teaching and Learning Conversations series. For the first time, CTAL will dedicate our teaching and learning conversations exclusively to graduate students, where they will be free to engage in challenging discussions surrounding their classroom experiences. Facilitated by experienced graduate students, these conversations will focus on issues that our future faculty have highlighted as critical for their success including: managing student and faculty expectations, authority in the classroom, dealing with conflict.
